“Give Back To Community Program” (GBTC) (回报社会助学计划）is designed to help university students who are able
and willing to give back to community to complete their studies and to help them better prepared for the future.
The idea was triggered by a trip visiting a newly built primary school by Project Hope (希望工程) in China.
We had two major concerns：
1) The “hope” of the children was rather remote；
2) The donation to build the school was one off, but the ongoing fund to maintain the school was unsecured.
Project Hope had served its purpose and was terminated. A few of us got together and designed GBTC applying our
business and management concepts. GBTC has the following special features:
1. In China, we target at students from the famous universities. The sponsored students are selected by us. A sponsor can
even specifically name his/her sponsored stud(s). Each student is sponsored RMB5000 for the school year which should
basically cover the tuition fee.We are working with Sun Yet Sen University (中山大学) of Guangzhou, China.
2. In Hong Kong, we work with universities to sponsor student groups to perform social service projects.
We are working with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大学).
3. The student candidates are recommended by the university and are interview by the sponsors for final selection. The
selection criteria are their willingness to give back to community as well as their ability to be successful after entering the
society.
4. After graduation, the students would naturally become members of GBTC. They are the new blood for GBTC.
5. One very special feature of GBTC is that the sponsors will organize regular meetings with students at witch we discuss
the topics of their interest and we share our work and life experiences with the students. The purpose is to better prepare
them to be successful after school.
GBTC was started in 2007 at Sun Yet Sen University, Guangzhou, China (中山大学) .
The sponsors are local Chinese, Hong Kong people, and Hong Kong people working and living in China.
The program was highly rated by the students and the university.
In 2012, we started up the Hong Kong chapter by cooperating with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大学).
The project was performed by about 100 pharmacy and nursing students under the leadership of two professors.
Their task was to go to various community centers in Hong Kong to conduct health check for elders during the
Summer vacation. The project was successfully concluded. We’ll continue to seek for meaningful projects in the future.
“Give Back to Community” has a double meaning. Today, we as sponsors are giving back to community.
Tomorrow, the students whom we sponsored will be giving back to community.
